Website Redesign SEO Checklist: Keep Your Rankings

By Manik MT · Last reviewed

Short answer

To keep rankings through a redesign, record a full URL and metadata baseline first, keep URLs stable or map each changed one with a single 301 redirect, preserve the content and internal links on pages that rank, confirm indexability and sitemap at launch, then monitor Search Console against the baseline.

Rankings are usually lost in a redesign for avoidable reasons: URLs change without redirects, content that ranked is removed, or metadata and tracking are forgotten. Treating SEO as part of the redesign, not a task for afterwards, prevents most of it.

Before launch: record what you have

Crawl the current site and export every indexable URL with its title, meta description, canonical, headings and internal links. Pull the top landing pages and queries from Search Console, and note which pages bring leads, not just traffic.

This inventory is your baseline. Without it you cannot tell afterwards what changed or what was lost.

Keep URLs where you can, map them where you can't

Do not change a URL unless there is a clear reason. Where a URL must change, map the old address to the closest equivalent new page with a single 301 redirect. Avoid redirect chains, and don't send everything to the homepage.

Preserve the content and signals that earn rankings

Pages that rank for a reason need to keep their substance: the main heading, the topic coverage and the internal links pointing to them. A cleaner design is no reason to cut a page's copy to a few lines.

Carry over titles, meta descriptions, canonical tags, structured data and image alt text, or improve them deliberately.

Check the launch itself

Before the switch, make sure the staging site is not indexable and that the live site is. Remove any noindex left over from staging, confirm robots.txt isn't blocking the site, and submit the updated XML sitemap containing only the final canonical URLs.

Test the www and non-www versions, HTTP to HTTPS, and trailing-slash behaviour so each page has a single address.

After launch: monitor, don't assume

Watch Search Console for crawl errors, 404s and coverage changes, and compare clicks and impressions for your key pages against the baseline. Check that analytics and conversion tracking still fire on the new forms and buttons.

Some fluctuation is normal while search engines re-crawl. A sustained drop on specific pages points to something you can trace in the inventory.

Key takeaways

  • Capture a full URL, metadata and performance baseline before touching anything.
  • Keep URLs stable; use one-step 301 redirects for any that must change.
  • Don't strip content or internal links from pages that already rank.
  • Verify indexability, sitemap and tracking at launch, then monitor in Search Console.
